Old dog urine smell in a mattress: what still works

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 2, 2026 · 6 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

Old dog urine can often be reduced, but it's harder to clear than a fresh accident. Over days, bacteria turn urea into ammonia and the stain spreads through the layers. Avocado says the longer urine stays on a mattress, the harder the stain and odor are to remove. Sparing enzyme treatment in stages works better than one heavy soak, and a soaked core may not fully recover.

Key terms used on this page

Urea and ammonia:
Urea is the main nitrogen-carrying compound in urine. Bacteria that make the enzyme urease break it down into ammonia and carbon dioxide, which is why stale urine smells sharper than fresh urine. NASA's study of stored human urine found that bacterial action decomposed the urea and released large amounts of ammonia.
Wicking (urine migration):
Liquid moving through and along fabric and foam by capillary action, so the affected area below the surface is often wider than the visible stain. Quilting, fiber batting and open-cell foam all wick. It is why a spot can look small and still smell from a wider area.
Enzyme cleaner:
A cleaning product that uses enzymes to break down organic soils such as urine, sweat, vomit or blood. Several mattress makers mention them for urine stains, including Purple and Avocado. They are liquids, so how much is applied matters as much as what is applied. Sleep Sanitation uses enzyme treatment on urine and organic odor, sparingly.
Odor rebound:
A urine smell that fades after cleaning and comes back later, often on humid days or when the bed is slept on again. The Carpet and Rug Institute notes that urine odor 'may reappear' in high humidity. It usually means residue remains deeper than the treatment reached.
Saturated core:
A mattress whose interior layers, not just the cover and quilting, were soaked by a large accident or several in one place. Surface treatment can't reach all of it. Some saturated cores improve with treatment and drying; some don't, and we say so before charging for work that won't help.
Residual moisture:
Water left in a material right after cleaning, before drying. For carpet, the Carpet and Rug Institute's test for its deep-cleaning extractor seal allows up to 8 ounces per square yard. We have not found an equivalent published test for mattresses.

An old dog accident is a different problem from a fresh one. Sometimes the accident happened while you were away, sometimes an older dog has been having small leaks for weeks, and sometimes you only notice the smell when the weather turns humid. Whatever the reason, time has changed what's in the bed.

What changes as dog urine ages

Fresh urine is mostly water with dissolved urea, salts and other compounds. Three things happen over the following days.

It turns to ammonia. Bacteria that make the enzyme urease split urea into ammonia and carbon dioxide. A 1989 microbiology review describes the reaction in one sentence: "Microbial ureases hydrolyze urea to ammonia and carbon dioxide." NASA's 1971 study saw the same thing in stored samples: "This bacterial action resulted in the decomposition of urea and the evolution of large amounts of ammonia."

It spreads. Liquid keeps wicking through fiber and foam after the surface feels dry. An old stain is usually wider below the surface than on it.

It dries, leaving solids behind. As the water evaporates, the dissolved compounds stay in the layers. Some of them barely dissolve in water to begin with. NASA's table lists uric acid's solubility at 0.00645 grams per 100 grams of water.

That bacterial step is why we describe our work as cleaning. The CDC's cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting terms are in Hub 2's glossary.

What the manufacturers say about time

Avocado's help center is the clearest on this (our Avocado page has its full advice): "The longer the urine remains on a mattress, the harder the stain and odor will be to remove." It goes on: "To remove urine from a mattress, you'll need a good enzymatic cleaner."

The Carpet and Rug Institute, writing about carpet, makes a related point. Its pet urine bulletin says: "Some urine spots may be immediately noticeable, while others may take weeks or months for a reaction." With dog urine on a mattress, that can mean a fabric stain that shows up long after the accident.

Finding where it really is

Before treating an old smell, find its edges. We do it by smell first, in a grid across the bed, close to the surface. Then we look at the fabric for yellowing or a faded ring. A UV flashlight can show some old stains, though not every mark under UV is urine.

Check the sides and the underside, too. On a bed a dog sleeps on, accidents near the edge often run down the border.

What still works on old urine

  • Enzyme treatment in stages. Enzymes are designed to break down organic soils like urine. On an old stain they need dwell time, so we let them sit as the label directs. We repeat a sparing application rather than drowning the stain once.
  • Low-moisture heat. Dry vapor helps the surface layers and helps them dry fast. It doesn't reach a deep core.
  • Air movement. A fan and a dry room let the bed finish drying after treatment. A dehumidifier helps in a basement or a humid month.
  • Patience. An old stain sometimes takes more than one round to show what's left.

What usually doesn't work

  • Fragrance. It hides the smell for days, not months. The Carpet and Rug Institute says masking products can let odor reappear in humid weather.
  • A big soak. Pouring cleaner on an old stain tries to chase urine that has spread wide. It adds more liquid than the accident did.
  • Baking soda alone. Useful for drawing moisture from the surface. It doesn't break urine down.

How we approach an old dog accident

This is our method, not any manufacturer's guidance.

For an aged dog stain, the enzyme application follows the map we've drawn, not the faded ring, and it goes on lightly so the comfort layer stays dry. After its dwell time come dry-vapor passes from a Magnum XP, ProV 350 or Pro6 Duo, matched to the material. Organic cleaning methods are our default, and old stains often get a second light round.

On memory foam or latex we keep output low and passes quick. Our memory foam and latex pages explain why. Why moisture matters covers the bigger picture, and dry vapor vs carpet extraction explains why we don't rinse old stains.

One old accident is covered by the standard price; severe, biohazard or extensive contamination gets a quoted surcharge.

An old stain tempts people to try anything, but the rules on your bed don't loosen with age. How we treat it is our own judgment, not the manufacturer's advice; the care label and warranty terms govern, so check your warranty before booking.

When an old smell means a lost bed

We tell people plainly when we think a bed won't recover. Signs we look for:

  • The smell comes from a wide area, not a spot.
  • Many accidents in the same place over weeks or months.
  • The core was wet through, from top to bottom.
  • A musty or moldy smell on top of the urine smell.

Mold is its own issue. The EPA's mold guidance advises drying wet materials within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth, and an old accident that never dried has missed that window. A moldy mattress is a replacement case, not a cleaning case.

Saatva, which sells mattresses, says in its cleaning guide: "Replace your mattress if it sags, has an odor, or is over 10 years old." That's broader than we'd apply to one old accident, but if odor survives proper treatment, replacement is the honest answer. Clean or replace after urine goes through the decision.

An older dog that keeps having accidents

If the accidents are ongoing, cleaning the bed treats the result, not the cause. Talk to your vet; new or worsening incontinence in an older dog can be a medical issue. In the meantime, a waterproof protector and a washable blanket on top protect the mattress from the next one.

A forgotten accident, day by day

Picture a dog accident on a guest bed that nobody notices for a week.

On day one it's a damp patch with a mild smell. Most of it is still in the cover and quilting. On days two and three it keeps spreading into the comfort layer while the top dries, and the smell sharpens as urea breaks down. By the end of the week the surface looks almost normal. There may be a faint yellow ring, and a smell that's strongest when the room is warm.

That's the bed we'd be treating: a stain wider than it looks, deeper than the surface suggests, and mostly dry. It's the reason we map before we treat, and why we expect an old accident to take more than one round.

Our complete guide to mattress urine explains how we sort beds before treatment. If the smell keeps returning after cleaning, see why urine odor comes back. For an older dog with ongoing accidents, read how many times a mattress can be treated.

Before you book

Tell whoever you hire what you know: roughly when the accident happened, whether you've already tried anything on it, and whether the dog has had accidents on the bed before. Each answer changes the plan. A stain that's been treated with a fragrance spray, for example, needs a different first step from one that hasn't been touched.

What we don't know

  • How far an old accident spread in your bed until we check it.
  • How often old dog urine odor is fully removed. No one publishes reliable numbers, and we don't invent them.
  • How a specific enzyme product interacts with your foam.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get old dog urine smell out of a mattress?+

Often it can be reduced a lot. Clearing it fully depends on how deep it went and how many accidents happened in the same place. One old spot is far easier than a pattern.

Why does old dog urine smell stronger than fresh?+

Bacteria break urea down into ammonia over time. NASA's 1971 urine study reports: 'This bacterial action resulted in the decomposition of urea and the evolution of large amounts of ammonia.' That ammonia is the sharp smell.

How can I find an old urine spot?+

Smell close to the surface in a grid, and look for faded or yellowed fabric. A UV flashlight can help show some old stains, though not every mark it lights up is urine.

Will airing the mattress outside fix it?+

Sun and air help a damp surface, but they don't break down urine inside the foam. Airing is a good finishing step, not a treatment.

Is an old urine smell a health risk?+

We don't make health claims. A musty smell or visible mold is a different problem from urine odor. We treat a moldy mattress as a replacement case, not a cleaning case.

Do you charge more for old stains?+

Not for an ordinary old accident; it's included. Severe, biohazard or extensive contamination gets a custom surcharge, quoted before we start.
