Mattress Sanitation Knowledge Center

What actually happens to a mattress when it's cleaned, explained with sources. Written by Sleep Sanitation founder Matthew Brunken for Sleep Sanitation, a mattress-only sanitation company in Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska.

Mattress cleaning is often described in the vocabulary of carpet cleaning, and the words get blurred: "steam cleaning" can mean a hot-water carpet extractor, a garment steamer or a pressurized dry-vapor boiler, and those do very different things to a mattress.

This Knowledge Center separates them. It is organized into hubs. Each hub has one flagship guide, a set of shorter articles that each answer one question, and a glossary of defined terms that the rest of the site relies on.

Editorial standards

We cite what we state.
Equipment specs come from manufacturer spec sheets. Study results come from the published paper. Care rules come from the mattress maker's own pages. Each article lists its sources.
We say when nobody knows.
Some questions have no published answer yet, such as exactly how much water a given steam pass leaves in a given mattress. When that's the case, we say so rather than guess.
We keep vendor claims labeled.
A steam-cleaner brochure saying "5% moisture" is a manufacturer claim, not a measurement we made. We tell you which is which.
We don't make medical promises.
Cleaning is about the mattress, not your health. It can't diagnose, treat or cure anything, and we won't write as if it could.
We use words the same way everywhere.
Terms like dry vapor steam, hot-water extraction and residual moisture are defined once and used consistently, so articles can build on each other.
