Why does my mattress smell? An odor-by-odor guide

Every mattress smell has a source, and the smell itself tells you where to look. This hub matches each common odor to its cause, links to the science, and shows how Sleep Sanitation removes it instead of covering it up.

Short answer

A mattress smells because sweat, skin oil, spills, urine, smoke or moisture have built up in the cover and foam. Musty points to damp, sour and sweaty point to body soil broken down by skin bacteria, fishy points to amines, and sharp ammonia points to urine. Sheets and sprays can't reach the source. Enzyme treatment, HEPA vacuuming, dry vapor steam and UV-C, twice a year, can.
