Between clients: reusing a mattress or bed in the home

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 14, 2026 · 1 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

Before a mattress goes back into use for a different person, inspect it: look for stains, odor, a torn cover or a soaked core. A sound, dry mattress can be cleaned and sanitized with low-moisture dry vapor steam and returned to use. A hospital-bed cover that's damaged or stained inside should be replaced, as the FDA advises. Rental equipment follows the supplier's process.

Key terms used on this page

Fluid ingress:
Body fluids getting through a worn or damaged mattress cover into the core. The FDA has warned about it.
Saturated core:
A mattress whose interior layers, not just the cover and quilting, were soaked by a large accident or several in one place. Surface treatment can't reach all of it. Some saturated cores improve with treatment and drying; some don't, and we say so before charging for work that won't help.

Sometimes a bed stays in a home and a different person will use it: a spouse moves in, a family member takes over the room, or an agency places a new client in a home with existing equipment.

Inspect first

  • Stains and odor on the mattress, not just the sheets.
  • For hospital-bed mattresses: the FDA advises checking for "cuts, tears, cracks, pinholes, snags, or stains," including the inside of the cover. The UK regulator advises disposing of damaged or stained covers.
  • A saturated core from repeated accidents.

Clean or replace

A sound, dry mattress can be cleaned and returned to use. Our decision center covers when a mattress is too contaminated to clean and whether a used mattress can be sanitized.

Equipment we don't service

Powered air and alternating-pressure mattresses follow the supplier's process. See why we don't clean them.

Sleep Sanitation's view

This section is our view. Agencies that group visits with us for route efficiency can ask about agency rates. We carry a certificate of insurance, available on request, and run background checks under our hiring policy, including a national sex offender registry check. Sleep Sanitation serves Omaha, Lincoln and surrounding towns. Every visit includes dry vapor steam, HEPA vacuuming, UV-C light treatment, the built-in bed mite sensor on our JIGOO UV-C mattress vacuum and a moisture check before we leave. Enzyme treatment is used on urine and other biological jobs, and ordinary accident treatment is included in the $249 first-mattress price. Severe or biohazard contamination carries a surcharge, and we tell you before any work starts. Call or text (402) 512-5658, or email info@sleepsanitation.com.
