Mattress care for aging in place: incontinence, hospital beds and caregivers

This hub is for older adults, families and caregivers keeping someone comfortable at home. It covers incontinence and bed protection, vinyl hospital-bed mattresses, why we don't service powered air mattresses, bed mites and odor in a bed used all day, drying, scheduling around a bedbound person, and an honest answer on who pays.

Monday–Friday, 9am–6pm. Missed a call? We return calls and texts on Saturday and Sunday too.

Short answer

Keep liquid out with a waterproof protector and bed pad, clean without soaking, skip fragrance, and know the mattress type. Vinyl and coated hospital-bed mattresses can be steam-sanitized after checking the maker's instructions; powered air mattresses follow the maker's own cleaning method. Usually the family pays; some hospice agencies and VA budgets may. No mattress cleaning treats any health condition.

Aging at home often means more time in bed, and sometimes a hospital bed, incontinence and a caregiver in the picture. This hub covers how to keep that mattress clean, dry and comfortable without overpromising what cleaning does.

Protect and clean

Start with what matters for an older adult's mattress. Incontinence and the mattress covers bed-pad layering and links to our accidents hub and enzyme science hub. Moisture and drying explains low-moisture cleaning. Bedroom odor links to our bedroom CO2 hub and stain chemistry hub.

Medical mattresses

We steam-sanitize vinyl and coated hospital-bed mattresses: see cleaning a hospital-bed mattress at home. We don't service powered air or alternating-pressure mattresses: see why, and what to do instead.

For caregivers

A caregiver's checklist, bed mites in a bedbound room, preparing the bed after a hospital stay, and scheduling around a bedbound person.

Paying for it

Who pays? gives the honest answer: usually the family. For home care and hospice agencies, see our hub for providers and provider page.

Sleep Sanitation's position

This section is our view. Sleep Sanitation serves Omaha, Lincoln and surrounding towns. Every visit includes dry vapor steam, HEPA vacuuming, UV-C light treatment, the built-in bed mite sensor on our JIGOO UV-C mattress vacuum and a moisture check before we leave. Enzyme treatment is used on urine and other biological jobs, and ordinary accident treatment is included in the $249 first-mattress price. Severe or biohazard contamination carries a surcharge, and we tell you before any work starts. Call or text (402) 512-5658, or email info@sleepsanitation.com.

What we don't know

Frequently asked questions

Do you clean hospital-bed mattresses?+

Yes, vinyl and coated ones, after checking the maker's instructions.

Do you clean alternating-pressure or air mattresses?+

No. Follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions and call the supplier if fluid got inside.

Can you work with a bedbound person in the room?+

Yes. A caregiver handles any transfer; we don't move people.

Does Medicare or insurance pay?+

Generally no. Some hospice agencies and VA Veteran-Directed Care budgets may. Ask your care coordinator.

Will cleaning help with allergies or infections?+

We don't make health claims. A clean, dry mattress is more comfortable; that's the honest benefit.
