Short answer
Use a fitted waterproof protector on every child's bed, and during potty training double-layer it: protector, sheet, protector, sheet, so a night change is one strip-off. Naturepedic recommends an organic waterproof protector pad for its quilted crib mattresses. If urine gets through, blot, air the mattress and don't soak it.
Key terms used on this page
- TPU membrane:
- A thin thermoplastic polyurethane film laminated to a protector's face fabric to stop liquid. Casper lists 'Polyester with Thermoplastic Polyurethane' for its waterproof protector's top.
- Skirt depth:
- How deep a fitted protector's stretch sides reach. Too shallow and it rides up, leaving the corners uncovered.
- Care label:
- The care instructions sewn into a mattress, topper or cover. Tempur UK notes that 'A label stitched inside the cover will give you specific care instructions for the item you have purchased.' A care label outranks general web guidance.
Potty-training bed
Double-layer setup
- Waterproof protector on the mattress
- Fitted sheet
- Second waterproof protector
- Second fitted sheet
- Spare set by the bed for night changes
Kids' beds see the most accidents, so they get the most from a protector.

Choose
- Fitted, waterproof, and a skirt deep enough that it doesn't ride up.
- Breathable or organic. Naturepedic's guidance for its quilted crib mattresses: "we recommend using an organic waterproof protector pad to prevent fluids from seeping into the mattress."
Double-layer for night changes
Protector, sheet, protector, sheet. A 2 a.m. accident means stripping the top two layers, not remaking the bed.
Wash and dry
Wash per the care label and dry fully; see how to wash.
If urine got through
Blot, air, and don't soak it. See what happens when urine soaks into a mattress and our accidents hub.
