Short answer
We recommend organic mattress protectors generally: organic cotton or wool, ideally certified. GOTS certifies textiles made with organic fibers across processing; OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certifies that a textile was tested for harmful substances. Naturepedic recommends an organic waterproof protector pad for its quilted crib mattresses. Wash per the care label, and dry thoroughly.
Key terms used on this page
- GOTS:
- The Global Organic Textile Standard: a certification for textiles made with organic fibres, with independent certification across processing.
- OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100:
- A label for textiles tested for harmful substances, from yarn to finished product.
- Care label:
- The care instructions sewn into a mattress, topper or cover. Tempur UK notes that 'A label stitched inside the cover will give you specific care instructions for the item you have purchased.' A care label outranks general web guidance.
If you chose a natural or organic mattress, an organic protector keeps the bed in line with that choice. We recommend them as a category. We don't recommend specific products.

What the labels mean
- GOTS: the Global Organic Textile Standard calls itself "a globally recognised certification for textiles made with organic fibres," with independent certification across the supply chain.
- OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100: "a label for textiles tested for harmful substances." It's about testing the finished textile, not about organic farming.
What brands say
Naturepedic's care page says that for quilted crib mattresses, "we recommend using an organic waterproof protector pad to prevent fluids from seeping into the mattress." Avocado's warranty covers its "Organic Cotton Mattress Pad Protectors" and "Organic Waterproof Mattress Protectors" under a one-year bedding warranty.
Cotton, wool and waterproof layers
Organic cotton is soft and washable. Wool adds warmth regulation and some moisture buffering. If you need waterproofing, look for an organic face over a waterproof layer.
Care
Follow the care label. Natural fibers can shrink in a hot dryer, and a damp protector should never go back on the bed. See how to wash and how to dry.
Sleep Sanitation's view
This section is our view. Sleep Sanitation serves Omaha, Lincoln and surrounding towns. Every visit includes dry vapor steam, HEPA vacuuming, UV-C light treatment, the built-in bed mite sensor on our JIGOO UV-C mattress vacuum and a moisture check before we leave. We take your protector off at the start of the visit, so you don't need to strip it first; wash it yourself per its care label while we work or afterward. The first mattress is $249. Call or text (402) 512-5658, or email info@sleepsanitation.com. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 9 to 6, and we return calls and texts on weekends.
