Kids' Mattresses

Moving from a crib to a big-kid bed

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 1 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

The switch is a natural reset point. Clean the crib mattress before it goes into storage or to another family, and set the new mattress up with a protector from night one, since potty training often comes at the same time. Book both into one visit, with each additional kids' bed at the kids' rate.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.

The crib mattress

If you're keeping it for a younger sibling or passing it on:

  1. Clean it before storage. Stains and odor are easier to remove now than after months in a closet.
  2. Store it dry and covered, off the floor, in a climate-controlled space (storing a mattress).
  3. Keep the label and care instructions with it.

The new bed

  1. Start with a protector. Potty training and the first big-kid bed often arrive together (protectors for kids and bedwetting).
  2. Choose a protector you can wash easily. Organic protectors are a good option (organic protectors).
  3. Plan for accidents. Normal accidents are included in our price, and here's what to do when urine soaks in.

One visit for both

Book the crib mattress and the new bed together, along with any siblings' beds. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249), and each additional kids' bed is $149.
