Short answer
Moisture that gets under a protector, from a spill around the edge, a protector put back on damp, or a humid room, has fewer ways out. The EPA says to dry wet items within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth, and Avocado's warranty advises proper airflow, mattress protectors and a dry environment. Never put a protector back on damp, air the bed regularly, and keep humidity down.
Key terms used on this page
- Moisture vapor transmission:
- How much water vapor passes through a fabric or membrane. Higher means more breathable; woven microfiber encasings let air and water vapor pass freely.
- Care label:
- The care instructions sewn into a mattress, topper or cover. Tempur UK notes that 'A label stitched inside the cover will give you specific care instructions for the item you have purchased.' A care label outranks general web guidance.
- Stain clause:
- The warranty term that excludes stained or soiled mattresses. Purple, Saatva and Avocado all exclude stains in their own warranty terms.
A protector keeps liquid out from above. The goal is to make sure moisture doesn't get trapped from other directions.

Where the moisture comes from
- A protector put back on before it's fully dry.
- A spill that runs off the edge, past the skirt.
- A humid bedroom, especially a bed against an outside wall.
Why it matters
The EPA: "It is important to dry water-damaged areas and items within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth." Avocado's warranty: "To prevent mold growth, ensure proper airflow, use mattress protectors, and maintain a dry environment by avoiding high humidity and moisture exposure." It also says the warranty "does not cover mold, odors, or discoloration."
Prevention
- Dry the protector completely before it goes back on. See how to dry a mattress protector.
- Air the bed with the protector off now and then.
- Keep humidity at or below 50 percent, which NIEHS also recommends for bed mites.
- If odor survives washing, see is the odor in the cover or the foam?.
