Pee in a crib mattress

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 1 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

Strip the crib, blot the spot with dry towels, and wash the sheet and cover. Don't soak the mattress to rinse it, because that spreads urine deeper into the foam. If the cover kept it out, you're done. If it reached the core or the smell comes back, enzyme treatment with low-moisture dry vapor steam targets the residue. Normal accidents are included in our price.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.

Right away

  1. Strip the bed and put the sheet and any removable cover in the wash.
  2. Blot the mattress with dry towels, pressing down. Don't rub.
  3. Don't flood it. Adding water to rinse it out pushes urine further in (what happens when urine soaks into a mattress).
  4. Skip scented sprays. They cover the smell without removing it (fragrance masking).
  5. Air it out standing up, with the room ventilated.

Did it get through?

Many crib mattresses have a waterproof or water-resistant surface, and a leak stays on top. Check the seams and zipper line, where liquid can slip past. If the cover is fabric over foam, or the smell returns once the sheet is back on, it reached the core.

How we treat it

Inspection to find where it went, enzyme treatment to break down the urine residue, low-moisture dry vapor steam, UV-C and a moisture check. Normal accidents are included. More on urine in the urine and accidents hub.
