When to replace a mattress protector: lifespan and the signs to watch for

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 15, 2026 · 1 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

Replace a protector when it stops doing its job: it leaks, the membrane peels or cracks, it starts to crinkle, the skirt no longer holds, or odor survives washing. How long that takes depends on the materials, how often it's washed and how hot it's dried. Check it every time you wash it.

Key terms used on this page

Delamination:
When a protector's waterproof film separates from its fabric, showing as bubbles, peeling or flakes. Casper warns heat drying can cause it.
Skirt depth:
How deep a fitted protector's stretch sides reach. Too shallow and it rides up, leaving the corners uncovered.
TPU membrane:
A thin thermoplastic polyurethane film laminated to a protector's face fabric to stop liquid. Casper lists 'Polyester with Thermoplastic Polyurethane' for its waterproof protector's top.

Signs to replace a protector

  • It leaks after a spill
  • The membrane peels, bubbles or flakes
  • It crinkles or feels stiff
  • The skirt no longer holds the corners
  • Odor survives washing
  • Any tear or pinhole

A worn protector looks fine on the bed and fails the first time something spills. Check it at every wash.

Signs it's time

  • Leaks: a damp spot on the mattress after a spill.
  • Peeling, bubbling or flaking: delamination, often from hot drying.
  • New crinkle or stiffness: the membrane is breaking down.
  • Stretched skirt: it rides up and leaves the corners open. Check the skirt depth on the replacement.
  • Odor after washing: see is the odor in the cover or the foam?.
  • Tears or pinholes.

Warranties on protectors

Protectors often carry their own warranty. Avocado covers its organic protectors under a one-year limited bedding warranty, and Casper has a separate limited Protector Warranty.

It depends on materials and care. Check it at every wash and replace it when it shows the signs below.

Is a protector with a small tear still OK?+
