Short answer
Most mattress warranties exclude stains. Purple excludes 'Tears, stains, odors, unsanitary conditions' and 'highly recommends the use of a stretchy, breathable mattress protector at all times to protect your mattress and preserve your warranty rights.' Saatva's 'does not apply if the mattress has been stained.' Avocado says stains and unsanitary conditions void the warranty and to 'Protect your investment with a mattress protector.'
Key terms used on this page
- Stain clause:
- The warranty term that excludes stained or soiled mattresses. Purple, Saatva and Avocado all exclude stains in their own warranty terms.
- Care label:
- The care instructions sewn into a mattress, topper or cover. Tempur UK notes that 'A label stitched inside the cover will give you specific care instructions for the item you have purchased.' A care label outranks general web guidance.
The stain clause is the warranty term most owners never read. Here's what brands say, quoted from their own pages.

Purple
Purple's warranty excludes "Tears, stains, odors, unsanitary conditions" and "damage from liquid or gels or blood or bodily fluids or other fluids." It continues: "Purple highly recommends the use of a stretchy, breathable mattress protector at all times to protect your mattress and preserve your warranty rights."
Saatva
"Warranty does not apply if the mattress has been stained, burned or otherwise abused, damaged, or tampered with."
Avocado
"Abuse, mishandling, and neglect will void your warranty, including stains and unsanitary conditions. The warranty does not cover mold, odors, or discoloration." And: "Protect your investment with a mattress protector."
Beautyrest
"In order to protect your mattress from stains and spills, we highly recommend using a mattress protector. This will also help with the overall health and lifespan of your mattress."
Naturepedic
For quilted crib mattresses: "we recommend using an organic waterproof protector pad to prevent fluids from seeping into the mattress."
What this means for you
A protector is the simplest way to keep a mattress within its stain terms. For each brand's cleaning guidance, see our compatibility hub, and for how soaking can cause problems, how wet extraction can void a warranty.
Sleep Sanitation's view
This section is our view. Sleep Sanitation serves Omaha, Lincoln and surrounding towns. Every visit includes dry vapor steam, HEPA vacuuming, UV-C light treatment, the built-in bed mite sensor on our JIGOO UV-C mattress vacuum and a moisture check before we leave. We take your protector off at the start of the visit, so you don't need to strip it first; wash it yourself per its care label while we work or afterward. The first mattress is $249. Call or text (402) 512-5658, or email info@sleepsanitation.com. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 9 to 6, and we return calls and texts on weekends.
