Mattress protectors for pets on the bed: hair, dander and accidents

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 15, 2026 · 1 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

If a pet sleeps on the bed, use a waterproof protector and wash it more often. It stops urine and drool at the surface and keeps hair and dander off the ticking. Choose a tight-knit face that sheds hair in the wash, and replace it if claws tear the membrane.

Key terms used on this page

TPU membrane:
A thin thermoplastic polyurethane film laminated to a protector's face fabric to stop liquid. Casper lists 'Polyester with Thermoplastic Polyurethane' for its waterproof protector's top.
Delamination:
When a protector's waterproof film separates from its fabric, showing as bubbles, peeling or flakes. Casper warns heat drying can cause it.

Pets on the bed mean hair, dander, drool and the occasional accident.

What the protector does

The waterproof membrane stops urine and drool before they reach the ticking. The face fabric catches hair and dander, and it all goes in the wash.

Choose

  • A tight knit face that releases hair in the wash.
  • A deep skirt that stays put when a dog circles.
  • A spare, so one can be in the wash.

After an accident

Strip it, check the mattress, blot anything that got through, and don't soak it. See pet urine vs human urine and our accidents hub.

Replace on damage

Claws can puncture the membrane. Any tear means liquid goes straight through: see when to replace.

Sleep Sanitation's view

This section is our view. Sleep Sanitation serves Omaha, Lincoln and surrounding towns. Every visit includes dry vapor steam, HEPA vacuuming, UV-C light treatment, the built-in bed mite sensor on our JIGOO UV-C mattress vacuum and a moisture check before we leave. We take your protector off at the start of the visit, so you don't need to strip it first; wash it yourself per its care label while we work or afterward. The first mattress is $249. Call or text (402) 512-5658, or email info@sleepsanitation.com. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 9 to 6, and we return calls and texts on weekends.
