How to clean a memory foam mattress

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 2 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

Read the care label first. Wash a removable cover as directed, vacuum the mattress, blot spills straight away, and spot clean with a barely damp cloth. Never soak the foam. Tempur-Pedic, for example, says its foam "should never become wet." For stains, odor and accidents below the surface, a low-moisture professional clean resets the mattress. Stains and normal accidents are included.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.

Memory foam is open-cell foam that soaks up liquid like a sponge, so the rule for cleaning it is simple: as little water as possible (what happens when water gets into memory foam).

Start with the care label

Manufacturers set the rules. Tempur-Pedic's product care page says "Never wash the TEMPUR® material" and that it "should never become wet" (Tempur-Pedic). Check your law tag and cover tag (how to read a mattress law tag).

Routine care

  1. Wash the cover only if the label says it's removable and washable (can you wash a mattress cover).
  2. Vacuum the top, sides and seams with an upholstery tool.
  3. Blot spills right away. Tempur-Pedic's steps are to blot without rubbing, then let the mattress air dry with a fan blowing across it (Tempur-Pedic).
  4. Spot clean lightly. A barely damp cloth, not a spray-down.

What not to do

Skip the carpet shampooer, soaking sprays and viral recipes (DIY mattress cleaning mistakes). For urine, see how to get urine out of memory foam without soaking it.

When to book

Odor that comes back, accidents, yellowing (why foam turns yellow) or a twice-a-year reset. Brand notes: Tempur-Pedic and Purple.
