Cleaning by Mattress Type

Should you unzip a mattress cover?

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 1 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

Not unless the manufacturer says the cover is removable. Some mattresses use a fire barrier that contains glass fiber under the cover, and removing it can expose that layer. Check the law tag and care label first. If it says spot clean only, leave it on and clean it in place.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.

Why the zipper is there

On many mattresses the zipper is a manufacturing feature. The cover may hold the layers together, and under it there may be a fire barrier. Some barriers use glass fiber (fire barriers and fiberglass).

Check first

  • Law tag and care label. Look for "do not remove cover" or "spot clean only" (how to read a law tag).
  • The maker's site. Tempur-Pedic, for example, lists which of its covers are removable and which are spot clean only (Tempur-Pedic).

The no-unzip way to clean it

Vacuum, spot clean lightly and use a protector. For a deeper clean we treat the cover in place: HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment, low-moisture dry vapor steam and UV-C, with nothing unzipped.
