Can you wash a mattress cover?

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 1 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

Only if the care tag says the cover is removable and washable. A zipper alone doesn't mean it's meant to come off. Many covers are part of the mattress's structure, and some sit over a fiberglass fire barrier. When the tag allows it, follow the maker's settings. Tempur-Pedic, for example, recommends a cold wash and cool or air drying. If not, vacuum and spot clean, and use a washable protector.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.

Read the tag, not the zipper

Zippers are often there for manufacturing, not cleaning. Some covers hold the foam in shape, and some sit over a fire barrier that can contain glass fiber (fire barriers and fiberglass). If the tag says spot clean only, keep it on.

If the tag says washable

Follow it exactly. Tempur-Pedic's guidance for its washable covers is cold wash, cool dry or air dry, and no bleach (Tempur-Pedic).

The easier route

Wash a protector instead. It goes in the machine and keeps the cover clean (how to wash a mattress protector). For the mattress itself, see can you put a mattress cover in the dryer and should you unzip a mattress cover.
