How to clean a latex mattress

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 1 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

Follow the manufacturer's care label. Latex makers such as PlushBeds say to spot clean the cover with a few drops of mild detergent in a cup of water, wipe it away with a damp cloth, let it air dry and keep the mattress out of direct sunlight. Don't soak it or machine wash the cover unless the label allows it. A low-moisture professional clean handles odor and stains.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.

Latex is made as Dunlop or Talalay foam (Dunlop vs Talalay), and many latex beds sit inside organic cotton or wool covers (ticking and cover fabrics).

What latex makers say

PlushBeds' care instructions:

  • Spot clean stains on the cover "with a clean cloth and a few drops of mild detergent in a cup of water," wipe it away with a clean, damp cloth and let the mattress "air dry."
  • "Do not use a hair dryer to dry."
  • Keep the mattress indoors "out of direct sunlight."
  • Do not machine wash or dry clean any part of the mattress or its cover (PlushBeds).

Other latex brands differ, so read your own label.

Routine care

Vacuum the top and seams, blot spills fast, keep a washable protector on it, and wash the protector often. If you want an organic protector, choose one that's washable.
