How to clean a mattress with a non-removable cover

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 1 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

Clean it in place. Vacuum the surface and seams, blot spills, and spot clean with a barely damp cloth and a little mild detergent, then let it air dry. Don't soak it. For odor, accidents and set-in stains, a low-moisture professional clean treats the cover and what's under it without removing anything.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.

Step by step

  1. Vacuum the top, sides and seams slowly with an upholstery tool.
  2. Blot fresh spills with a dry towel. Press, don't rub. That's the first step in Tempur-Pedic's spill guidance (Tempur-Pedic).
  3. Spot clean with a barely damp cloth. PlushBeds suggests a few drops of mild detergent in a cup of water, then a clean damp cloth to wipe it away (PlushBeds).
  4. Air dry with a fan. No hair dryer.

What goes wrong

Over-wetting is the big one. Water left in a mattress can lead to a musty smell (why does my mattress smell musty).

Book the deep clean

We clean in place, with no unzipping. Stains and normal accidents are included.

This section is our view. Memory foam, latex, hybrid and pillow-top mattresses all share one rule: keep water out of the core. Every Sleep Sanitation visit starts with a check of your care label and an inspection, then HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment on organic stains and odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. Stains, normal accidents and pet odor are included. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249), any size. Each additional king is $199, each full or queen is $179, and underside treatment is +$50–$75. We recommend cleaning every mattress twice a year.
