Short answer
Follow the topper's care label. Wash a removable cover if it's washable, but don't machine wash the foam or latex itself. Vacuum it, blot spills, spot clean lightly and air dry. Tempur-Pedic, for example, says not to wash or dry clean the TEMPUR-Topper Supreme, though its cover can be washed cold. We can clean the topper in the same visit as the mattress.

Toppers take the sweat and spills first. That's why a topper can smell before the mattress does.
What to do
- Cover: wash it only if the tag says so. Tempur-Pedic's topper covers wash cold and dry cool, and the topper itself is not washed or dry cleaned (Tempur-Pedic).
- Foam or latex: vacuum, blot and spot clean lightly. Keep latex out of direct sun (PlushBeds).
- Never put a foam topper through a washing machine.
