Short answer
Remove the source, not just the scent. Fresh sweat is nearly odorless; the smell comes when skin bacteria break down sweat and skin oil left in the mattress. HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment on the sweat zone and low-moisture dry vapor steam remove that buildup. Avoid soaking the bed with peroxide or detergent, which pushes water deep into the foam.

Key terms used on this page
- Sebum:
- The oily film made by the skin's sebaceous glands. Picardo and colleagues describe squalene and wax esters as lipids unique to human sebum.
"Getting sweat smells out of mattress" threads fill cleaning forums, and most of the advice involves pouring liquid into the bed. Here's what actually works.
Why sweat smell sticks
Underarm secretions are odorless when fresh; researchers have shown that skin bacteria cleave odorless precursors into the pungent acids behind body odor (Natsch et al.; James et al.). Skin oil adds to the film; sebum contains squalene and wax esters found nowhere else in the body (Picardo et al.). In a mattress, that film builds up where the head, shoulders and torso rest, which is also where sweat stains form (sweat stains and yellowing).
What backfires
- Saturating the bed. Hydrogen peroxide soaks, detergent and carpet extractors put water where it can't easily get back out (surface moisture vs saturation).
- Fragrance sprays. They add scent on top of the sweat (fragrance masking).
- Detergent left behind. Residue attracts soil and can hold odor (detergent residue).
What works
- Dry HEPA vacuuming of the top, sides and seams to pull out skin flakes.
- Enzyme treatment on the sweat zone, applied sparingly and given its dwell time.
- Low-moisture dry vapor steam to clean the surface without soaking it.
- A washable organic protector to catch new sweat, washed with your sheets (how often to wash bedding).
- Twice-a-year professional cleaning so the buildup never gets deep.
If you sleep hot, the topper and the mattress both collect sweat; see why toppers smell.
How we get the smell out
This section is our view. Every Sleep Sanitation visit starts with a nose-and-eyes inspection to find where the odor actually lives, then HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment on organic odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. That sequence goes after the source of the smell instead of covering it with fragrance. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249), any size. We recommend cleaning every mattress twice a year so odor never gets a head start. Not sure what your bed needs? Take the 60-second mattress quiz, or schedule your cleaning.
