Short answer
Toppers sit closest to your body, so they collect sweat, skin oil and spills first and often smell before the mattress does. A chemical smell in a new foam topper is off-gassing; sweat and sour smells are body soil; a mildew smell means moisture is trapped between the topper and the mattress. Low-moisture cleaning, airflow and a washable organic protector over the topper fix most of it.

Autocomplete fills in "mattress topper smells like" with chemicals, sweat, mildew, pee and fish. Each one has a different cause.
Why toppers smell first
A topper is the layer your body actually touches, through a sheet. It catches sweat and skin oil before the mattress does, and many toppers are thick memory foam that holds heat and moisture.
What each smell means
| Topper smells like | Likely cause | Where to go |
|---|---|---|
| Chemicals, new foam | Off-gassing from new foam | Off-gassing and CertiPUR-US |
| Sweat, sour | Body soil breaking down | Sweat smell |
| Mildew, musty | Moisture trapped between layers | Musty smell |
| Pee | Urine, human or pet | Urine and odor guide |
| Fish | Amines from organic soil | Fishy smell |
Why mildew forms under a topper
The topper and mattress press together all night, and moisture from sweat has nowhere to go. If the mattress sits on a solid base too, both layers stay damp. Lifting the topper to air the mattress, and keeping the bedroom in the EPA's recommended 30 to 50 percent humidity range (EPA), help a lot.
Clean, protect or replace?
Most foam toppers can't go in a washer. Our schedule hub covers whether to wash, sanitize or replace a topper. We clean toppers with the same low-moisture dry vapor steam, HEPA vacuuming and UV-C we use on mattresses, and we recommend a washable organic protector over the topper, not just the mattress (organic protectors).
How we get the smell out
This section is our view. Every Sleep Sanitation visit starts with a nose-and-eyes inspection to find where the odor actually lives, then HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment on organic odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. That sequence goes after the source of the smell instead of covering it with fragrance. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249), any size. We recommend cleaning every mattress twice a year so odor never gets a head start. Not sure what your bed needs? Take the 60-second mattress quiz, or schedule your cleaning.
