Mattress Odor Guide

Why does one side of the bed smell like body odor?

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 2 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

Because every sleeper leaves a different amount of sweat and skin oil, and carries different skin bacteria. Researchers note the skin microbes that make body odor vary from person to person, so one side of a shared bed can build odor faster. The fix is the same as for the whole bed: enzyme treatment and dry vapor steam on that side, an organic protector, and twice-a-year cleaning.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.

It's common for couples to notice that one side of the mattress smells and the other doesn't. That isn't a sign anything is wrong with the mattress. It's how body odor works.

Why sides differ

Body odor is made when skin bacteria break down sweat and oil. The American Society for Microbiology notes that the skin microbiota differs from person to person, and even between the left and right armpit of the same person (ASM). Add differences in how hot each person sleeps, how much they sweat, and hair and skin products, and one side can build odor much faster.

The same reason one side turns darker

Odor and discoloration often go together. Our stain chemistry hub explains why one side of the bed turns darker and how body oil yellows over time (sweat stains and yellowing).

Pets count too

If a dog or cat sleeps on one side, that side collects dander, oils and the occasional accident. Sharp ammonia means urine (urine and odor guide).

How to fix the smelly side

  1. HEPA-vacuum the whole mattress, with extra passes on the odor side.
  2. Enzyme treatment on that side's sweat zone.
  3. Low-moisture dry vapor steam over the full surface so both sides end up even.
  4. A washable organic protector across the whole bed.
  5. Rotate the mattress if the maker allows it, and clean twice a year.

How we get the smell out

This section is our view. Every Sleep Sanitation visit starts with a nose-and-eyes inspection to find where the odor actually lives, then HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment on organic odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. That sequence goes after the source of the smell instead of covering it with fragrance. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249), any size. We recommend cleaning every mattress twice a year so odor never gets a head start. Not sure what your bed needs? Take the 60-second mattress quiz, or schedule your cleaning. Frequently asked questions

Why does my husband's side of the bed smell?+

Sleepers differ in how much they sweat and which skin bacteria they carry, so one side can build odor faster.

Can you clean just one side of a mattress?+

We treat the odor side more intensively but clean the whole surface so the bed ends up even.

Does rotating the mattress help?+

It spreads wear and sweat more evenly if the maker allows it. It doesn't remove odor already there.

Is a smelly side a reason to replace the mattress?+

Usually not. Body odor is buildup that professional cleaning removes.
