Short answer
A musty smell means moisture has been sitting in or under the mattress. The EPA explains that growing mold gives off microbial volatile organic compounds, the source of the familiar musty odor. Common causes are humid bedrooms, night sweat, a solid platform or a mattress on the floor, and past wet cleaning. Removing the odor takes low-moisture cleaning plus a drier bedroom.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.
Musty is the smell of damp. If your mattress smells like a basement, an old cabin or a towel that never dried, moisture is the cause.
What makes a mattress smell musty?
The EPA's mold course explains that growing molds release microbial volatile organic compounds, and that because these often have strong or unpleasant odors, "they can be the source of the 'moldy odor' or musty smell frequently associated with mold growth" (EPA). A mattress supplies the two things that growth needs: moisture from the sleeper and the room, and organic material from skin and spills.
The usual sources of moisture
- The bedroom itself. The EPA advises keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent (EPA).
- Sweat. A sleeper adds moisture every night, and foam slows how fast it leaves (moisture and mildew).
- No airflow underneath. Solid platforms, storage drawers and mattresses on the floor trap moisture on the underside.
- Past wet cleaning. Extraction and soaking push water deep into the bed (why a wet-cleaned mattress can smell worse later).
Is musty the same as mildew?
Mostly, yes. The EPA notes molds are "also called fungi or mildew." Our page on mold vs mildew smell covers how to tell surface mildew from deeper growth.
How to get the musty smell out
Don't add more water. Home recipes that soak the bed with vinegar or detergent feed the problem (viral recipes, ingredient by ingredient). What works is a low-moisture approach: HEPA vacuuming of the top, sides and underside, dry vapor steam that cleans at the surface without saturating the foam, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. Then keep the room in the EPA's humidity range, give the mattress airflow underneath, and clean it twice a year.
How we get the smell out
This section is our view. Every Sleep Sanitation visit starts with a nose-and-eyes inspection to find where the odor actually lives, then HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment on organic odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. That sequence goes after the source of the smell instead of covering it with fragrance. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249), any size. We recommend cleaning every mattress twice a year so odor never gets a head start. Not sure what your bed needs? Take the 60-second mattress quiz, or schedule your cleaning.
