Under the Mattress

Why is the bottom of my mattress damp?

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 2 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

Usually condensation. Your body warms the mattress all night, and if the base underneath is cooler and solid, moisture collects where the two meet. The EPA says condensation can be a sign of high humidity and advises lowering humidity and increasing air movement. Common culprits are solid platforms, floor beds, cold exterior walls and basement bedrooms.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.

A damp underside surprises people because the top of the bed feels dry. The water isn't coming from a leak. It's coming from you and the room.

How condensation forms under a bed

Warm, moist air cools when it meets a cooler surface, and water collects. The EPA notes that "condensation can be a sign of high humidity" and lists ways to prevent it: reduce humidity, "increase ventilation or air movement," use fans and increase air temperature (EPA).

The usual setups

What to do

Lift and air the mattress, move it a few inches off the wall, add airflow under it and bring humidity down. A breathable organic protector on top helps keep sweat out of the bed in the first place (organic protectors).

Then clean it

Damp undersides tend to smell musty and pick up dust. Our underside treatment adds HEPA vacuuming, low-moisture dry vapor steam and UV-C to the side that touches the base, and we check moisture before we leave (how to tell if moisture reached the core).

How we clean what you can't see

This section is our view. Every Sleep Sanitation visit starts with a nose-and-eyes inspection to find where the odor actually lives, then HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment on organic odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. Underside treatment, for the side that faces the floor or frame, is +$50–$75 per mattress. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249), any size. We recommend cleaning every mattress twice a year so odor never gets a head start. Not sure what your bed needs? Take the 60-second mattress quiz, or schedule your cleaning. Frequently asked questions

Why is my mattress wet underneath?+

Most often condensation: body heat meets a cooler, solid base and moisture collects. The EPA ties condensation to high humidity.

Is a damp mattress underside a problem?+

Moisture that stays can lead to musty odor and mildew, which is why airflow and humidity control matter.

How do I stop condensation under my mattress?+

Lower humidity, add airflow under the bed and move it off cold walls, as the EPA recommends for condensation generally.

Can the underside be cleaned?+

Yes. Underside treatment is an add-on to any mattress cleaning.
