Under the Mattress

Should you clean a box spring?

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 1 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

Yes. A box spring sits directly under the mattress and collects dust, debris and moisture from it, and its fabric cover can hold the same odors. HEPA vacuuming, low-moisture dry vapor steam and UV-C treat the top and sides without soaking it. Clean it with the mattress, especially after a move, storage or a used purchase.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.

People clean the mattress and forget the box spring under it. It's the same fabric, sitting in the same spot, catching what falls through.

What collects in a box spring

Dust and skin flakes work down through the mattress edges, and moisture from the sleeper settles onto the top fabric. The thin dust cover on the bottom collects whatever lives under the bed.

How we clean one

The same low-moisture sequence as a mattress: HEPA vacuuming of the top, sides and seams, dry vapor steam and UV-C light treatment, with a moisture check before we leave. No soaking, because a box spring's wood frame and fabric don't do well wet.

When it matters most

Encase or protect it

A breathable organic cover on the mattress keeps sweat from reaching the box spring (organic protectors). Clean the box spring and frame together while the bed is stripped (slats and frames).

How we clean what you can't see

This section is our view. Every Sleep Sanitation visit starts with a nose-and-eyes inspection to find where the odor actually lives, then HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment on organic odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. Underside treatment, for the side that faces the floor or frame, is +$50–$75 per mattress. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249), any size. We recommend cleaning every mattress twice a year so odor never gets a head start. Not sure what your bed needs? Take the 60-second mattress quiz, or schedule your cleaning.
