How to clean an RV mattress

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 1 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

Vacuum the top and sides, blot spills, and spot clean with a barely damp cloth. Then lift the mattress and check the underside: RV mattresses usually sit on a flat deck with little airflow, where condensation can form. For odor, stains and a full reset, we clean RV mattresses on site where the RV is parked.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.

RV mattresses live a harder life than house mattresses. They sit on plywood decks, ride through temperature swings and get stored for months.

Why RV mattresses get damp underneath

Mattresses in RVs, boats and trucks usually rest on plywood or other flat, hard surfaces with minimal air circulation, and when the surface is colder than the mattress, condensation can form underneath (Mattress Insider). Winnebago designed its WinnSleep system specifically to improve under-mattress air circulation "to help eliminate condensation" (Winnebago). The EPA says the key to mold control is moisture control (EPA).

Routine care

  1. Strip and wash bedding and the mattress protector.
  2. Vacuum the top, sides and seams.
  3. Blot spills and spot clean lightly; never soak an RV mattress.
  4. Lift the mattress and look at the underside and the deck. Damp or dark spots mean it's time for mold cleanup under an RV mattress.
  5. Air it out with vents open before you store the rig.

We clean RV and camper mattresses on site

This section is our view. We come to your RV, camper or trailer where it's parked and clean the mattress in place: HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment on organic stains and odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check. Underside treatment, for the side that sits on the bed deck, is +$50–$75. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249). Add the house beds to the same visit: each additional king is $199, each full or queen is $179, and each bunk or kids' mattress is $149. A good rhythm is once before the season and once after, which lines up with our twice-a-year recommendation. Schedule your cleaning. Call or text (402) 512-5658, or email info@sleepsanitation.com.
