Short answer
In a dry, climate-controlled space, months to a year or more. Saatva says that's the range for a temperature-controlled unit. In a garage or unheated unit, the shorter the better, because humidity is what ruins a stored mattress. Sealy recommends a dry unit at a moderate temperature and advises against airtight wrapping or vacuum-sealing.

What makers say
- Saatva: in a temperature-controlled unit, "a few months to a year or more without any damage." Without climate control, "the less time in storage, the better" (Saatva).
- Sealy: storage for weeks or months "is not a problem for most mattresses kept flat in a climate-controlled environment." It recommends a dry unit at a moderate temperature and doesn't recommend airtight packaging or vacuum-sealing (Sealy).
Make it last
Store it flat, off the floor and covered (storage how-to), and check it on visits. When it comes out, clean it top and bottom.

How we clean what you can't see
This section is our view. Every Sleep Sanitation visit starts with a nose-and-eyes inspection to find where the odor actually lives, then HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment on organic odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. Underside treatment, for the side that faces the floor or frame, is +$50–$75 per mattress. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249), any size. We recommend cleaning every mattress twice a year. Take the 60-second mattress quiz or schedule your cleaning. Call or text (402) 512-5658, or email info@sleepsanitation.com.
