Short answer
Spots or a musty smell under a floor mattress mean moisture has been trapped between the bed and the floor. The EPA lists the surfaces behind furniture, where condensation forms, among places mold can hide. Fix the moisture first: lift the bed, add airflow and lower humidity. Light mildew and musty odor on the underside respond to HEPA vacuuming, low-moisture dry vapor steam and UV-C.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.
Lifting a floor mattress and finding spots or a damp smell is one of the most common reasons people search "mold under mattress on floor."
Why it happens
The EPA explains that hidden mold can grow where condensation forms, including "the surface of walls behind furniture," and that "condensation can be a sign of high humidity" (EPA). A mattress on the floor creates the same pocket: a warm bed against a cooler floor with no air moving between them.
What to do first
- Stand the mattress up and let air reach both the underside and the floor.
- Find the moisture source. Humid room, cold floor, a basement bedroom or a spill.
- Lower humidity. The EPA recommends 30 to 50 percent, and fans to "increase ventilation or air movement."
- Fix the setup before putting the bed back: a slatted frame or breathable base (airflow under the mattress).
Can the mattress be cleaned?
Musty odor and light surface mildew on the underside are exactly what our underside treatment is for: HEPA vacuuming, low-moisture dry vapor steam that doesn't add the water that caused it, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. If growth has gone deep into the foam, we'll tell you at inspection (mold vs mildew smell; moisture and mildew).
How we clean what you can't see
This section is our view. Every Sleep Sanitation visit starts with a nose-and-eyes inspection to find where the odor actually lives, then HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment on organic odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. Underside treatment, for the side that faces the floor or frame, is +$50–$75 per mattress. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249), any size. We recommend cleaning every mattress twice a year so odor never gets a head start. Not sure what your bed needs? Take the 60-second mattress quiz, or schedule your cleaning.
