Short answer
It can be, mainly because of moisture. A sleeper adds moisture every night, and a mattress flat on the floor has no airflow underneath to carry it away. The EPA calls moisture control the key to mold control. If you sleep on the floor, lift and air the mattress often, keep humidity under 60 percent, and have the underside cleaned with the top.

Floor beds are popular for minimalist rooms, toddlers and first apartments. The bed itself is fine on the floor. What changes is the underside.
Why the floor changes things
Every night a sleeper adds sweat and warmth to the mattress. On a frame, some of that moisture leaves through the bottom. On the floor, the underside presses against a surface that is often cooler than the bed, and moisture has nowhere to go. The EPA's guidance is blunt: "The key to mold control is moisture control" (EPA).
Signs the underside needs attention
- A musty smell when you lift the mattress (musty mattress smell).
- Damp or cool spots on the bottom fabric.
- Dark spots on the underside or on the floor beneath it (mold under a floor mattress).
How to keep a floor bed in good shape
- Lift and air it. Stand the mattress on its side regularly so the underside can breathe.
- Add airflow. A slatted floor frame or breathable mat lifts the bed off the floor (platform and storage beds).
- Watch humidity. The EPA advises keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally 30 to 50 percent.
- Clean both sides. Our underside treatment cleans the side that faces the floor (should you clean the underside?).

How we clean what you can't see
This section is our view. Every Sleep Sanitation visit starts with a nose-and-eyes inspection to find where the odor actually lives, then HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment on organic odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. Underside treatment, for the side that faces the floor or frame, is +$50–$75 per mattress. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249), any size. We recommend cleaning every mattress twice a year so odor never gets a head start. Not sure what your bed needs? Take the 60-second mattress quiz, or schedule your cleaning.
