Under the Mattress

Do platform and storage beds trap moisture under a mattress?

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 2 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

They can. A solid platform or storage bed blocks airflow under the mattress, so moisture from the sleeper has less room to escape, and under-bed drawers collect dust. The EPA advises increasing air movement to prevent condensation. Slatted or vented bases breathe better. Whatever the base, airing the mattress and cleaning the underside keeps it fresh.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.

Storage beds solve a closet problem and create an airflow problem. Here's how to get both.

Why airflow matters

The EPA's moisture guidance recommends reducing humidity and increasing "ventilation or air movement" to prevent condensation (EPA). A solid base removes the air movement underneath, so the bottom of the mattress depends entirely on the room.

Making a storage bed work

  • Lift the mattress or the hinged deck regularly to air it.
  • Don't pack drawers or lift-up storage with damp items.
  • Vacuum the deck and drawers when you change the sheets.
  • Keep humidity in the EPA's 30 to 50 percent range.
  • Have the underside cleaned with the top (underside treatment).

How we clean what you can't see

This section is our view. Every Sleep Sanitation visit starts with a nose-and-eyes inspection to find where the odor actually lives, then HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment on organic odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. Underside treatment, for the side that faces the floor or frame, is +$50–$75 per mattress. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249), any size. We recommend cleaning every mattress twice a year so odor never gets a head start. Not sure what your bed needs? Take the 60-second mattress quiz, or schedule your cleaning. Frequently asked questions

Do storage beds cause mold under the mattress?+

They can make it more likely by blocking airflow. Airing the mattress and controlling humidity keep moisture down.

Is a slatted base better for a mattress?+

Slats let air move under the mattress. Follow your mattress maker's guidance on slat spacing.

How do I keep a platform bed mattress fresh?+

Lift it regularly, keep humidity at 30 to 50 percent, and have both sides cleaned twice a year.

Should I clean under-bed storage?+

Yes. Drawers and decks collect dust that ends up on the mattress underside.
