Short answer
There's no set number of days. Mold depends on moisture, not the calendar. A mattress on a cool or damp floor can trap moisture from the sleeper underneath it. The EPA says the key to mold control is moisture control, and that wet materials should be dried within 24 to 48 hours. Lift and air the mattress often, and have the underside cleaned with the top.

Moisture, not days
The EPA puts it plainly: "The key to mold control is moisture control." It also advises drying damp or wet materials "within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth" (EPA). A mattress flat on a cool floor can stay damp underneath from body moisture, which is why the underside gets damp.
Keep a floor bed dry
- Lift it and stand it up to air regularly.
- Use a slatted base or a breathable mat rather than bare concrete (platform and storage beds).
- Keep indoor humidity at 30 to 50 percent, the EPA's recommended range (EPA).

How we clean what you can't see
This section is our view. Every Sleep Sanitation visit starts with a nose-and-eyes inspection to find where the odor actually lives, then HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment on organic odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. Underside treatment, for the side that faces the floor or frame, is +$50–$75 per mattress. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249), any size. We recommend cleaning every mattress twice a year. Take the 60-second mattress quiz or schedule your cleaning. Call or text (402) 512-5658, or email info@sleepsanitation.com.
