Short answer
Under-bed storage is fine if air can still move. Bins and boxes packed tight under a bed trap dust and block airflow to the underside of the mattress, especially on a solid platform. Leave gaps, use lidded bins, vacuum under the bed when you change the sheets, and have the underside cleaned with the top.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.
This is about the bins and boxes, not built-in drawer beds (those are covered in platform and storage beds).
Why it matters
The underside of a mattress gives off moisture from the sleeper. The EPA's advice for moisture is airflow and humidity control (EPA). Packing the space under the bed solid takes that airflow away and builds up dust (why the underside gets damp).
Do it better
- Lidded bins with gaps between them, not a solid wall of boxes.
- Keep it dry. Nothing damp, and no laundry waiting to be folded.
- Vacuum under the bed each time you change the sheets.
- Pull everything out twice a year and clean the bed then.

How we clean what you can't see
This section is our view. Every Sleep Sanitation visit starts with a nose-and-eyes inspection to find where the odor actually lives, then HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment on organic odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. Underside treatment, for the side that faces the floor or frame, is +$50–$75 per mattress. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249), any size. We recommend cleaning every mattress twice a year. Take the 60-second mattress quiz or schedule your cleaning. Call or text (402) 512-5658, or email info@sleepsanitation.com.
