Mold under an RV mattress

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 2 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

Mold under an RV mattress comes from condensation on a cold, flat bed deck with no airflow. Fix the moisture first: ventilate, run a dehumidifier and consider a ventilated underlay. Then have the mattress cleaned on site with underside treatment. The EPA says the key to mold control is moisture control.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.

It's one of the most common RV discoveries: you lift the mattress and the underside, or the plywood beneath it, has dark spots.

Why it happens

Body heat warms the mattress, the deck underneath is colder, and with little airflow the moisture condenses and can't evaporate (Mattress Insider). Beds in slide-outs or over exterior storage bays are more exposed to cold. Winnebago built its WinnSleep system to improve under-mattress airflow for this reason (Winnebago).

Fix the moisture first

The EPA's guidance: "The key to mold control is moisture control," and dry water-damaged areas within 24–48 hours (EPA). In an RV that means:

  1. Ventilate. Use roof vents and the range fan when cooking.
  2. Run a dehumidifier when the rig is occupied in cool, damp weather.
  3. Add airflow under the mattress, such as a ventilated underlay (Mattress Insider).
  4. Clean the deck following the EPA's guidance for hard surfaces.

Then clean the mattress

We clean the mattress on site with underside treatment. For mold on house mattresses, see mold under a mattress on the floor.

We clean RV and camper mattresses on site

This section is our view. We come to your RV, camper or trailer where it's parked and clean the mattress in place: HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment on organic stains and odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check. Underside treatment, for the side that sits on the bed deck, is +$50–$75. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249). Add the house beds to the same visit: each additional king is $199, each full or queen is $179, and each bunk or kids' mattress is $149. A good rhythm is once before the season and once after, which lines up with our twice-a-year recommendation. Schedule your cleaning. Call or text (402) 512-5658, or email info@sleepsanitation.com.
