Short answer
After storage, open the camper, air the mattress out, vacuum it, spot clean lightly and check the underside for damp spots. Campers sit closed up for months, so musty odor is common. For odor and stains, we clean camper mattresses on site.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.
Campers and travel trailers sit closed for months between trips, which is exactly when a mattress picks up a musty smell (why does my mattress smell musty).
Opening day checklist
- Air it out. Open windows and vents and stand the mattress on edge if the bed allows it.
- Vacuum top, sides and seams to pick up dust and anything that moved in over winter.
- Check the underside and the bed deck. Flat platforms with little airflow can trap condensation (Mattress Insider).
- Spot clean lightly with a barely damp cloth.
Closing day checklist
Wash the bedding, leave the mattress uncovered and dry, and crack the vents if your manufacturer allows it. The EPA's guidance is to control moisture to control mold (EPA). See also cleaning a mattress after storage.

We clean RV and camper mattresses on site
This section is our view. We come to your RV, camper or trailer where it's parked and clean the mattress in place: HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment on organic stains and odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check. Underside treatment, for the side that sits on the bed deck, is +$50–$75. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249). Add the house beds to the same visit: each additional king is $199, each full or queen is $179, and each bunk or kids' mattress is $149. A good rhythm is once before the season and once after, which lines up with our twice-a-year recommendation. Schedule your cleaning. Call or text (402) 512-5658, or email info@sleepsanitation.com.
