Muddy paw prints: what soaks through

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 1 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

Dry mud on sheets usually stays in the sheets or protector. Wet mud on a bare mattress can carry soil and water into the top fabric. Let it dry, vacuum off the loose soil, then blot the mark lightly with a barely damp cloth instead of scrubbing with water. Stains and pet odor are included in our mattress price.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.

What soaks through

  • Sheets plus protector: mud usually stops at the protector. Wash both.
  • Sheets only: wet mud can pass through thin cotton and mark the mattress fabric.
  • Bare mattress: the fabric holds soil and water at the surface, and a soaking-wet dog can push moisture deeper (surface moisture vs saturation).

How to clean a muddy mark

  1. Let it dry. Wet mud smears. Dry mud mostly vacuums off.
  2. Vacuum the dried soil with an upholstery tool.
  3. Blot lightly with a cloth that's barely damp. Don't pour water or cleaner onto the mattress (DIY mistakes).
  4. Leave the rest to us. Normal stain treatment is included in the mattress price, and dry vapor steam is low-moisture.

Prevention

The EPA notes that "wiping your pet's feet before they come indoors can help" keep tracked-in dirt down (EPA). A towel by the door and a protector do most of the work.

This section is our view. Every Sleep Sanitation visit starts with a nose-and-eyes inspection, then HEPA vacuuming to lift hair, dander and debris, enzyme treatment on organic odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. Pet odor treatment is included in the mattress price, along with normal stains and ordinary urine accidents. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249), any size, and underside treatment is +$50–$75.
