Can fleas live in a mattress?

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 2 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

Fleas spend their adult life on the animal, but eggs, larvae and pupae end up where the pet rests. The CDC says fleas can live in carpets, bedding and other surfaces pets frequent, and the EPA says to pay particular attention to areas where pets sleep. If your pet sleeps on your bed, the bed is part of the treatment area.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.

If your dog or cat has fleas and sleeps with you, it's reasonable to wonder about the mattress.

Where fleas live

The CDC says fleas "can live in carpets, bedding, and other surfaces in the home that pets frequent" (CDC). The EPA tells pet owners to "pay particular attention to areas where pets sleep" and to wash "family bedding on which pets lie" (EPA). A bed your pet sleeps on counts.

Signs to look for

  • Tiny dark specks on the sheets or the pet's favorite spot (flea dirt).
  • Fleas on the pet, especially at the neck and in front of the tail, which a flea comb will find.
  • Bites at the ankles or lower legs, which the CDC notes is where flea bites often occur.

Why it takes more than one step

The CDC describes a four-step process: sanitation, treating every pet, treating the home, and follow-up, because fleas have "a complex life cycle" (CDC). The mattress belongs in the sanitation step. See how to get fleas out of a mattress and topper and does steam kill fleas in a mattress?.

How we clean a bed you share with a pet

This section is our view. Every Sleep Sanitation visit starts with a nose-and-eyes inspection, then HEPA vacuuming to lift hair, dander and debris, enzyme treatment on organic odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. Pet odor treatment is included in the mattress price, along with normal stains and ordinary urine accidents. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249), any size, and underside treatment is +$50–$75. We recommend cleaning every mattress twice a year, and more often is fine when a pet shares the bed. Take the 60-second mattress quiz or schedule your cleaning.
