Short answer
For your mattress, yes, as long as you keep up with it. A dog adds hair, dander, outdoor dirt from its paws, drool and body oils, and the EPA notes that pets shed allergens indoors. Use a washable protector, wash bedding often, vacuum the mattress, and have it professionally cleaned twice a year. Pet odor treatment is included in our mattress price.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.
Whether your dog sleeps on the bed is your call. This page is only about the mattress: what a dog brings to it and how to keep it fresh.
What a dog adds to the bed
- Hair and dander. The EPA lists pet allergens among household biological contaminants and notes that "people and pets can also track biological pollutants indoors or shed them indoors" (EPA).
- Outdoor dirt. Paws carry soil, grass and mud straight onto the sheets (muddy paw prints).
- Body oils and drool. These build up in fabric and feed the "dog smell" (drool and vomit).
- Fleas, sometimes. The CDC notes fleas "can live in carpets, bedding, and other surfaces in the home that pets frequent" (CDC).
A simple routine for a shared bed
- Put a washable protector under the sheets (protector for pets on the bed).
- Wash sheets and any blanket the dog lies on often. The EPA advises washing family bedding pets lie on in hot, soapy water.
- Vacuum the mattress surface when you change the sheets (dog hair out of a mattress).
- Wipe paws before bed. The EPA says wiping your pet's feet before they come indoors can help.
- Book a professional cleaning twice a year.

This section is our view. Every Sleep Sanitation visit starts with a nose-and-eyes inspection, then HEPA vacuuming to lift hair, dander and debris, enzyme treatment on organic odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. Pet odor treatment is included in the mattress price, along with normal stains and ordinary urine accidents. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249), any size, and underside treatment is +$50–$75.
