Short answer
Pet dander doesn't leave a mattress on its own. It settles into the fabric and the dust in and around the bed, and stays until it's removed. The EPA lists pet allergens among indoor biological contaminants and notes household dust can contain many of them. Removal means washing bedding, vacuuming the mattress, and professional HEPA vacuuming and cleaning.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.
People often ask this after a pet has passed away or moved out, or before a guest with no pets stays over.
Dander becomes part of the dust
The EPA lists "pet allergens" among household biological contaminants and says "household dust, which can be stirred up into the air during normal indoor activities, can contain many biological contaminants" (EPA). A mattress collects that dust in its fabric and quilting (what lives in mattress dust). Nothing in it leaves on a schedule. It stays until you remove it.
How to remove it
- Wash everything washable: sheets, protector, pillowcases, blankets. The EPA recommends routinely washing household linens.
- Vacuum the mattress slowly, both sides, seams and border.
- Vacuum around the bed: the frame, headboard, carpet and under the bed (underside cleaning).
- Book a professional clean. HEPA vacuuming, dry vapor steam and UV-C, with pet odor treatment included.
