Does steam kill fleas in a mattress?

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 2 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

The EPA says hot steam and soap used on carpets "can kill fleas in all stages of the life cycle." On a mattress, the right tool is low-moisture dry vapor steam, which brings heat to the surface without soaking the foam. Pair it with thorough vacuuming and treatment of every pet, as the CDC advises.

What the EPA says

In its flea guidance the EPA recommends steam cleaning carpets because "the hot steam and soap can kill fleas in all stages of the life cycle" (EPA). Heat is the point.

Why a mattress needs a different steamer

Carpet steam cleaners spray hot water and extract it. A mattress isn't a carpet: water pushed into foam is hard to get back out (why carpet gear doesn't fit a mattress). Dry vapor steam is superheated, low-moisture vapor, so it brings heat to the fabric and seams without flooding the mattress.

How we use it during a flea problem

  1. HEPA vacuuming first, slowly over every panel, seam and border, to remove eggs, larvae, flea dirt and hair.
  2. Dry vapor steam passes over the surface and seams.
  3. UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave.
  4. Underside treatment on request for the side that faces the base.

Steam treats the mattress. The CDC says every pet in the home must be treated at the same time and follow-up continues for weeks (CDC). See how to get fleas out of a mattress and topper.

Pet odor treatment is included in the mattress price, along with normal stains and ordinary urine accidents.
