Cat scratching or kneading the cover

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 1 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

Kneading and scratching pull threads and work hair and dander into the cover. Keep a protector and a thick top blanket on the bed, give the cat a scratching post and its own blanket nearby, trim claws, and vacuum the cover when you change the sheets. Professional cleaning twice a year handles hair, dander and cat odor, and pet odor treatment is included.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.

What kneading and scratching do to a mattress

  • Snags and pulled threads in knit and quilted covers.
  • Hair and dander worked into the fabric with every knead (pet dander in a mattress).

Protect the cover

  1. Keep a protector on. It takes the claws instead of the cover (protector for pets on the bed).
  2. Add a thick blanket on top where the cat likes to settle.
  3. Offer alternatives: a scratching post near the bed and a blanket of its own.
  4. Keep claws trimmed.
  5. Don't pull loose threads. Trim them flush.

Keep it clean

Vacuum the cover when you change the sheets and wash the cat's blanket often. If your cat has had an accident on the bed, see cat urine in a mattress. Our cleaning includes HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment, dry vapor steam and UV-C, and pet odor treatment is included.

This section is our view. Every Sleep Sanitation visit starts with a nose-and-eyes inspection, then HEPA vacuuming to lift hair, dander and debris, enzyme treatment on organic odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. Pet odor treatment is included in the mattress price, along with normal stains and ordinary urine accidents. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249), any size, and underside treatment is +$50–$75.
