Pets on the Bed

Keeping the bed clean with a shedding dog

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 1 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

Brush the dog often, give it a washable blanket on top of the bed, wash that blanket and the sheets often, vacuum the mattress when you change the sheets, and keep a protector on. Then have the mattress professionally cleaned twice a year to reset what a weekly routine can't reach.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.

Heavy shedders put hair on the bed faster than a lint roller can keep up. A routine makes it manageable.

Every day or two

  • Brush the dog, outside if you can. The CDC also advises brushing pets regularly as part of flea prevention (CDC).
  • Shake out the dog's top blanket outside.

Every week

  • Wash the top blanket and sheets. The EPA advises washing bedding pets lie on in hot, soapy water (EPA).
  • Vacuum the mattress when the sheets are off (dog hair out of a mattress).
  • Vacuum the floor around the bed, where hair collects in drifts.

Every month or so

Twice a year

  • Professional mattress cleaning: HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment, dry vapor steam and UV-C. Pet odor treatment is included.

A layer on top of the bed, plus a protector for pets on the bed, keeps most of the hair out of the mattress itself.

How we clean a bed you share with a pet

This section is our view. Every Sleep Sanitation visit starts with a nose-and-eyes inspection, then HEPA vacuuming to lift hair, dander and debris, enzyme treatment on organic odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. Pet odor treatment is included in the mattress price, along with normal stains and ordinary urine accidents. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249), any size, and underside treatment is +$50–$75. We recommend cleaning every mattress twice a year, and more often is fine when a pet shares the bed. Take the 60-second mattress quiz or schedule your cleaning.
