Long-term hospital-bed placements: twice a year in home care

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 27, 2026 · 2 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

We recommend cleaning every mattress twice a year, and that includes vinyl and coated hospital-bed mattresses placed in a client's home for the long term. Agencies and DME suppliers can put clients on a twice-a-year schedule, and we can group those visits by area.

For agencies and care teams

Key terms used on this page

Coated cover:
A vinyl or polyurethane-coated fabric cover on a hospital-bed mattress, meant to keep fluids out of the foam.
Grouped scheduling:
An agency sending several clients in the same area so visits run on an efficient route. Qualifies for our agency rate.

Twice a year

A long-term placement routine

  • First visit when the bed is placed or soon after
  • Second visit six months later
  • Sooner after an accident or illness
  • A Service Summary each time

Some hospital beds go home for a few weeks. Others stay for months or years. The longer a mattress is in daily use, the more a routine helps.

Our recommendation

We recommend cleaning twice a year. For a client who spends most of the day in bed, that routine keeps the mattress on a regular cycle of sanitation and inspection. Clean sooner after an accident or illness in the home.

Setting it up

Each visit

Each visit includes the inspection, dry vapor steam with the surface verified at 212°F or higher, HEPA vacuuming and UV-C, and a Service Summary. Over time, the summaries give the family a history of the mattress.

Sleep Sanitation's view

This section is our view. Agencies that group visits by area are route-efficiency partners and get reduced agency rates: request agency rates. We carry a certificate of insurance, available on request, and run background checks under our hiring policy, including a national sex offender registry check. Sleep Sanitation serves Omaha, Lincoln and surrounding towns. Every visit includes dry vapor steam with the mattress surface verified at 212°F or higher with a temperature gun, HEPA vacuuming, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. Allow 1–2 hours per mattress. Our technician removes the mattress protector during the visit and leaves a one-time supply of special detergent sheets for washing it. Enzyme treatment is used on urine. Every visit ends with a Service Summary, and a copy can go to the agency with the client's or family's permission. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249); additional mattresses in the same visit are $199 for a king or California king, $179 for a full or queen and $149 for a twin or kids bed. Severe soiling carries a surcharge, disclosed before any work starts. Call or text (402) 512-5658, or email info@sleepsanitation.com.
