Toddler mattress after a stomach bug

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 1 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

Remove solids, blot without rubbing, and wash all bedding. Keep water to a minimum on the mattress itself, since soaking pushes the mess deeper. Once the household is back to normal, book a cleaning: enzyme treatment breaks down the organic residue that holds the stain and smell, followed by low-moisture dry vapor steam and UV-C. Normal accidents are included.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.

This page covers cleanup of the mattress only.

The cleanup

  1. Strip the bed and bag the bedding on the way to the washer.
  2. Lift off solids with paper towels. Don't press them in.
  3. Blot with dry towels until nothing more transfers.
  4. Go easy on water. Spot clean with a barely damp cloth. Don't pour water or cleaner on the mattress (where water goes).
  5. Air the mattress standing up in a ventilated room.

Why the smell hangs around

Vomit and diarrhea are organic residue, and residue is what holds stain and odor. Enzyme treatment is built to break it down (vomit on a mattress; which enzyme for which stain).

Book the reset

When everyone's back on their feet, we'll clean the toddler mattress and any other kids' beds in one visit. Normal accidents and stains are included, and each additional kids' bed is $149.

A whole-house reset for the kids' beds

This section is our view. Kids' beds see the most spills, accidents and late-night messes in the house, so we clean them together in one visit. Every Sleep Sanitation visit starts with an inspection, then HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment on organic stains and odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. Normal accidents, stains and pet odor are included. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249), any size, and each additional kids' bed in the same visit is $149. Underside treatment is +$50–$75. We recommend cleaning every mattress twice a year. Take the 60-second mattress quiz or schedule your cleaning.
