Bassinet and pack-n-play mattresses

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 1 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for that product, since bassinet pads and play yard mattresses vary. In general: wash any removable cover as directed, wipe vinyl surfaces, vacuum fabric, and avoid soaking padded foam. Add them to a home visit and we clean them alongside the rest of the kids' beds.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.

Bassinets and pack-n-plays move between rooms, cars and grandparents' houses, so they pick up a little of everywhere.

Follow the product's instructions

Bassinet pads and play yard mattresses come in different builds: vinyl-wrapped boards, foam in a fabric cover, or a fabric pad over a hard insert. Each manufacturer lists what can be washed and how. Start there, and use only the mattress or pad made for that product.

Home care

  1. Wash the sheet and any removable cover as the label directs.
  2. Wipe vinyl surfaces with a damp cloth and mild soap, then dry.
  3. Vacuum fabric surfaces and seams.
  4. Don't soak padded foam. The EPA's guidance is that moisture control is the key to mold control (EPA).
  5. Store it dry between trips.

Adding it to a visit

When we come out for the crib and other kids' beds, we can clean a fabric bassinet or play yard pad with the same low-moisture process. Tell us the brand and model when you book.

A whole-house reset for the kids' beds

This section is our view. Kids' beds see the most spills, accidents and late-night messes in the house, so we clean them together in one visit. Every Sleep Sanitation visit starts with an inspection, then HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment on organic stains and odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. Normal accidents, stains and pet odor are included. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249), any size, and each additional kids' bed in the same visit is $149. Underside treatment is +$50–$75. We recommend cleaning every mattress twice a year. Take the 60-second mattress quiz or schedule your cleaning.
