Kids' Mattresses

Top bunk mattresses

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 1 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

Top bunks are the hardest mattress in the house to strip, so they tend to get cleaned least. Wash the bedding on the same schedule as every other bed, vacuum the mattress when the sheets are off, and include both bunks and any trundle in a professional visit. Bunk and trundle mattresses are usually twins, priced as additional kids' beds.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.

Why top bunks get skipped

Changing a top bunk means climbing, reaching and wrestling a fitted sheet in a tight space, so it slips down the list. It still gets the same sweat, crumbs and accidents as any other bed.

At home

  1. Wash bedding on the same schedule as the other beds. The EPA recommends routinely washing household linens (EPA).
  2. Vacuum the mattress while the sheets are off, including the side against the wall.
  3. Lift the mattress now and then to check the slats or deck beneath for dust and damp (cleaning bed slats).

How we handle bunks

We clean bunk and trundle mattresses in the room. Strip the bedding before we arrive and we'll take it from there. Bunk and trundle mattresses are usually twins, priced at $149 each as additional kids' beds, so a bunk room is an easy add to a whole-house visit.

A whole-house reset for the kids' beds

This section is our view. Kids' beds see the most spills, accidents and late-night messes in the house, so we clean them together in one visit. Every Sleep Sanitation visit starts with an inspection, then HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment on organic stains and odor, low-moisture dry vapor steam from our Italian-made Vapor Clean machines, UV-C light treatment and a moisture check before we leave. Normal accidents, stains and pet odor are included. The first mattress is $199 Fall 2026 special (regularly $249), any size, and each additional kids' bed in the same visit is $149. Underside treatment is +$50–$75. We recommend cleaning every mattress twice a year. Take the 60-second mattress quiz or schedule your cleaning.
