Crib mattress cleaning

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 2 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

Start with the manufacturer's care label. Wash any removable cover as directed, vacuum the mattress, and spot clean with a barely damp cloth rather than soaking it, because foam holds water. For odor and stains that sit below the surface, a professional low-moisture clean with HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment, dry vapor steam and UV-C resets the mattress. Normal accidents are included.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.

Crib mattresses take spit-up, diaper leaks and spills from day one. Most are a foam or coil core inside a waterproof or water-resistant cover.

Check the label first

Crib mattresses vary a lot. Some have a removable, washable cover, some have a wipe-clean surface, and some (like Newton and other breathable mattresses) have their own washing instructions. Follow what the manufacturer says for that mattress.

Regular care at home

  1. Strip and wash the crib sheet and any removable cover per the label. The EPA recommends routinely washing household linens (EPA).
  2. Vacuum the mattress, including the seams and edges where crumbs and lint collect.
  3. Spot clean lightly with a barely damp cloth. Don't pour water or cleaner onto it. The EPA's rule for moisture is simple: "The key to mold control is moisture control" (EPA).
  4. Let the mattress air out before you make it up again.

When to book a professional clean

We clean the surface, seams and sides with low-moisture dry vapor steam, so the core isn't flooded.
