Kids' Mattresses

Toddler floor beds

By Matthew Brunken · Updated October 24, 2026 · 1 min read · Editorial standards

Short answer

A floor bed puts the mattress straight on the floor, so the underside gets no airflow and moisture can collect there. Lift and air the mattress regularly, consider a slatted floor frame, keep room humidity in the EPA's 30 to 50 percent range, and have the underside cleaned with the top. Underside treatment is an add-on to any cleaning.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.

Floor beds are popular for toddlers moving out of the crib. The mattress-care question is what happens underneath.

What changes on the floor

A sleeping child adds warmth and moisture every night, and a mattress flat on the floor has nowhere for it to go. The EPA advises keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally 30 to 50 percent, and says "the key to mold control is moisture control" (EPA). We cover this in depth in is it bad to put a mattress on the floor? and the under the mattress hub.

Floor bed routine

  1. Lift and air it when you change the sheets.
  2. Add airflow with a slatted floor frame or breathable base.
  3. Check the underside and the floor for damp spots or a musty smell (mold under a floor mattress).
  4. Use a protector made for the mattress (kids' protectors).
  5. Clean both sides. Underside treatment is +$50–$75 (should you clean the underside?).
