Short answer
Old stains have oxidized and bonded with the fibers, which is why they resist home cleaners ([why old stains resist enzymes](/knowledge-center/mattress-enzyme-science/why-old-stains-resist-enzymes)). Vacuum, identify the stain family and treat lightly. For the full reset, our cleaning includes enzyme treatment, targeted spotting and low-moisture dry vapor steam. Stains are included.

HEPA vacuuming, enzyme treatment for organic odor, dry vapor steam and UV-C. We recommend cleaning twice a year.
Time and heat change stains: proteins denature, oils oxidize and the color sets.
What to do right away
- Identify the family (mystery stain guide).
- Vacuum first.
- Treat lightly with the right product for the family.
- Keep it light. Work with a barely damp cloth; never pour liquid on a mattress.
What not to do
Don't keep reapplying cleaners; repeated soaking leaves rings. For the general rules, see DIY mattress cleaning mistakes and the stain chemistry hub.
