Why would a newer home have dust mites?
Dust mites don't come from the house. They live wherever people sleep. A mattress collects shed skin every night, and each sleeper adds warmth and humidity. Within months of use, any mattress, new or old, can support a mite population. What builds up is their debris, along with skin flakes and dust.
Kids' rooms: more to hold onto
Children's rooms usually have more fabric than any other room in the house: stuffed animals, throw blankets, fabric headboards and a pile of pillows. All of it holds dust. Kids also spend more hours in bed than adults do. We give extra time to the head end of the mattress and the seams, and we're happy to show you what the UV-C reader picks up.
Basement bedrooms and humidity
Lower-level bedrooms are common in Elkhorn. They stay cool, which is nice, but they're often more humid than upstairs rooms, and a guest mattress down there may go months without use. That's a good combination for dust mites and a stale smell. What helps:
- Run a dehumidifier in summer and aim for under 50 percent humidity.
- Keep the mattress in an encasement if the room isn't used often.
- Book a mattress reset once a year, ideally before guests arrive.
What our visit does
We use dry vapor steam to heat the upper layers of the mattress without soaking it, then a HEPA mattress vacuum with UV-C light treatment to lift loosened debris. The result is a mattress with less built-up debris, and one that isn't left damp, which matters because damp foam is exactly what mites prefer.
What it can't do
No treatment keeps a mattress free of dust mites forever. They come back wherever people sleep, so regular habits matter as much as any visit. And if you see bites in rows, dark spots on seams or insects, that points to bed bugs. Call a licensed pest control company first.
